I Have Friends In Higher Places

Whatever happened

To the life that you took?

The one you stole out west

And put down in a book?

The one you meant to save

For me

That’s kept me dying

To read your diary

About the secrets never told

That you should have mentioned

Never thinking twice to get rid of

All but discretion

But what caught my attention

The superficial invention

Of how you meant to say

“Believe”

That it’s all worth deceiving

When the ones that you love

Aren’t ones to be misleading

Yet we all

Take our time

When we don’t want to wake up

To a life of crime

Or less than you say it should be

It wasn’t poison or the malt that you drank

That makes it any more different

Towards the way I think

Correct me if I’m wrong, You’ll see

You’re passed out

Faking sleep and hiding

No intention to breathe

And you’re drowning

But you’re scared

You want to make it through the night

And rest your eyes when you’re dead

Or until the hope restores the team

And it’s all worth deceiving

When the ones that you love

Aren’t ones to be misleading

Yet we all

Take our time

When we don’t want to wake up

To a life of crime

Or less than you say it should be

And they cheat

And you lie

And they sink

And you die

Make sure you keep your extensions

Pretend to pay no attention

And force yourself to make believe

That it’s all worth deceiving

When the ones that you love

Aren’t ones to be misleading

Yet we all

Take our time

When we don’t want to wake up

To a life of crime

Or less than you say it should be
